Post 3: Nutrition Basics

Nutrition is the study of how the body uses food to sustain life.  Many of us think about food all the time.. we think about the way it looks, smells and tastes.. but we don't think about the way it makes us feel.  We don't think about what it does to our bodies.. how we extract energy from it.. we just eat it.  If we were to think about the effects of eating.. both good and bad, we'd likely make food choices based on that.  I'll give you an example.  Diet soda.. I used to drink it by the barrel full.  I loved it.. with lemon.. any time of the day.  I started getting headaches. Really bad ones, like where I couldn't open my eyes.  It felt like someone was jabbing me in the skull/eye socket with an ice pick.  They would last weeks at a time. I went to a holistic nutritionist (not on purpose.. just randomly) who told me to give up the diet soda for 2 weeks and see if its better.  It worked.. I was amazed.  Now, anytime I take even a few sips of diet anything (aspartame particularly.. I don't know about the effects of splenda or stevia yet.. not interested in finding out) I get a horrible headache and it takes about a week to get rid of.  I have had to consciously make the decision not to drink/eat diet products or I suffer.  I hate suffering.  My point?  Whatever you put in your body should in some way help you.. not hurt you.  So now lets talk about nutrition :)

There are 6 Essential Nutrients (substances in food that keep you healthy).  Water, Fat, Carbohydrates, Protein, Vitamins and Minerals.  You have to have them to sustain life.. that's why they're essential!

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are a major energy source. Along with providing fuel for physical activity, they also power the body's involuntary functions, including heartbeat, breathing and digestive processes. Food sources of carbohydrates include grains and grain products, vegetables, fruits, legumes, dairy products and sugars. Carbohydrates should supply 40 to 60 percent of the average person's caloric intake.

Proteins

Skin, muscle and bones depend on dietary protein for normal growth, development and maintenance. Getting enough protein is rarely a problem in industrialized countries such as the U.S. Complete proteins from animal sources contain all the amino acids your body needs for normal functioning. Plant sources only contain incomplete proteins, meaning some amino acids are missing. If you do not eat much meat, poultry, fish or other animal products, eat a variety of protein-rich plant foods such as beans, nuts and whole grains to ensure an optimal combination of amino acids.

Lipids (Fats)

You may think of lipids, or fats, as dietary enemies, but they are as necessary to the body's normal functioning as the other essential nutrients. Dietary fat helps the absorption of vitamins, supports cell membrane health and helps maintain the immune system. Not all fats are equal. Choose healthy unsaturated fats such as olive oil and nut oil instead of saturated fats from fatty meats.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins are micronutrients, meaning the body needs them in small quantities. Vitamins are organic compounds produced by living beings, while minerals are inorganic elements that originate in the earth. Vitamins and minerals support the body's biochemical processes. Each of the vitamins and minerals has a distinct function, including regulating metabolism, guarding the cells from oxidative stress and synthesizing hormones.

Water

Comprising 60 percent of your body weight, water is vital for the normal functioning of all your body's systems. It helps cleanse your body of wastes and toxins, carries essential nutrients to your cells, lubricates your joints and helps maintain your body temperature.

Lets play a game: Fact or Fiction:
There are many misconceptions regarding the essential nutrients.. lets tackle a few.  I will make a statement and I want you to find the accuracy of each one and give an explanation for your opinion.  Be sure to include a link to where you found the answers!!  Please also comment on someone's post.

  7. 1. Fact- I believe Carbohydrates do make you fat but only based on the calorie intake of the them. Taking in to many calories of Carbohydrates at once can increase the chances of weight gain.
    http://www.calorieking.com/learnabouts/Do-Carbohydrates-Make-You-Fat_OTgx.html
    2. Fiction- I don't believe that skipping meals can help you lose weight. It will cause you to each feel even hungrier throughout the day and cause you to into more all at one time.

    3. Fiction- Any other liquid will not fill the 8 glass requirement for each day. Water will keep you hydrated and will drain any toxin’s and wastes in your system.

    4. Fact- Eating extra protein can help you build extra muscle when going to the gym and adding more calories to your diet. But if you don’t add more calories to you diet with the protein or don’t go to the gym, it won’t help you gain more muscle mass.

    5. Fiction- Only because a food is healthy, calories are still having to be considered. Having too many calories of a healthy food can still lead to weight gain.

  8. 1. Fiction. Having to many calories for certain carbohydrates is what causes weight gain. It's the calories that make a difference not the carbs. 45-65% of calories should come from carbohydrat http://www.calorieking.com/learnabouts/Do-Carbohydrates-Make-You-Fat_OTgx.htmles.

    2. Fiction. According to familydoctor.org "Eat breakfast and don't skip meals. While skipping meals may help you lose weight in the beginning, it fails in the long run. Skipping meals may make you feel too hungry later in the day, causing you to overeat at your next meal. After about a month of eating a normal breakfast, lunch and a light dinner, your body will adjust."

    3. Fiction. According to mayo clinic .org every system in your body depends on water. Lack of water intake can lead to dehydration. In order for your body to function properly you must replenish its water supply.

    4. Fiction. Consuming to much protein can actually harm your body. According to WebMD adding more protein but not more calories or exercise to your diet won't help you build more muscle mass, but it may put your other bodily systems under stress.
    http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/will-eating-more-protein-help-your-body-gain-muscle-faster
    5. Fiction. Just because a food is healthy doesn’t mean it is something you should eat all the time. Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories but also contain fiber calories that your body can’t absorb. According to livestrong.com It would be nearly impossible to overdose on these foods because they supply bulk and can cause discomfort if you eat too much of the.

  9. 1.) Fact. Eating larger amounts of carbohydrates increases blood glucose levels causing the level of insulin in your blood to rise. When insulin levels reach their max the extra amounts of glucose are stored away in the form of fat. http://www.diabeteshealth.com/diabetes/why-eating-too-many-carbs-makes-you-fat/

2.) Fiction. In the long run skipping meals will not help you lose weight, in fact it might actually make you gain weight due to the fact that you will feel hungry later in the day causing you to over eat during the next meal. http://familydoctor.org/familydoctor/en/prevention-wellness/food-nutrition/weight-loss/what-it-takes-to-lose-weight.html1.) Fact.

3.) Fiction because 60% of the human body is water and 90% of your body weight is water. Soda, juice, or any other drinks that you may purchase will have large amounts of sugar, due to the amount of sugar in these drinks they are usally un healthy for you.

4.) Fiction. Excessive amounts of protein will eventually become toxic to the body, the excessive amount of protein will be stored as fat or could lead to kidney disease.

5.) Fiction. If food is healthy you cant eat as much as you want without gaining weight isent true because even though a food could be healthy, like fruit you will still gain weight is you eat large amounts of it often.

  10. 1. I found that Carbohydrates are indeed most of the time good and some are really bad. Like the veggie side of the Carbohydrates are really good for you like id it is earth grown. Bad carbs are like the man made like in factories. Fake carbs are foods that have been so overly processed – fiber stripped, nutrients stripped, water squeezed out, fat added, salt added, sugar added, calories added found on www.pritikin.com i agree the carbohydrates are good it just depends on which you decide to eat. so it is fiction
    2. no it does Dr. Nwe of Ace Medical Weight Loss Center warn of the dangers of skipping meals. "Every week we see a patient trying to lose weight by skipping breakfast and sometimes even lunch eating only once a day. But instead of losing weight they are gaining the weight. so it is fiction.
    3. it is fiction because your body is made of water so it needs water and water is absorbed into blood and if you drink like soda that is sugar and that would be absorbed and processed into fat. Even if you drink anything with low calories it would still turn into fat. According to discovernewnutrition.com your first choice would be water over soda coffe or tea or any sport drinks.
    4. it is fiction because the body can only absorb so much protein in your system the rest i think will turn to fat know my knowledge on the body. To much protein makes your kidneys kick into over drive and flush ketnoes out of your body. you can lose a lot of water from this to.
    5. it is fiction again no matter how much you eat the body will absorb it and make it into something to feed the muscles. but it also depends on the amount of calories you take in or if they are good or bad and how good or bad the carbohydrates are and no matter what you eat the body needs fat to survive.
